The agreement brings Poland’s national AI safety research center into work on frontier-model evaluation, potential vulnerabilities and safeguards.
OpenAI announced on October 23 that it had signed an agreement with Poland's NASK National Research Institute to explore joint work on AI safety, security and technical research. The collaboration involves NASK's AI Safety Research Center, which serves as the Polish Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute, and focuses on evaluating increasingly capable systems, identifying vulnerabilities and strengthening safeguards.
The announcement describes a research agreement, not the deployment of a new model, a completed safety evaluation or the release of a finished security product. NASK director Radosław Nielek highlighted research into emerging threats, detection of synthetic content and multilingual dimensions of AI misuse, according to the statement. OpenAI also framed the partnership as part of work with public research institutions to develop comparable approaches to testing and risk assessment.
The organizations have worked together on defensive security before. OpenAI says CERT Polska, a unit operating within NASK, received access to its cyber-capable models through the Daybreak program in July. According to the announcement, the Polish team used the models to identify six vulnerabilities in MikroTik RouterOS, and the vendor released fixes that CERT Polska checked against the observed attacks.
The new agreement extends that relationship into broader AI-safety research; OpenAI did not provide a timetable for results in its announcement.
