Automations let developers run agent tasks hourly, daily, weekly or on demand, starting from a template or their own prompt. The VS Code team's release notes for version 1.137, dated September 9, describe the same feature as a preview that was rolling out gradually, with templates for catching up on changes, triaging issues or finding bugs. Those notes also say users first had to switch on a setting to try it.\n\nThe second preview feature is agent merge. According to GitHub, enabling it in an active session lets the agent handle review feedback, failed checks, merge conflicts and workflow reruns. The changelog does not say how often the agent succeeds or what limits apply, and we have not tested it.\n\nGitHub also says users can open a pull request form from a Copilot, Claude or Codex session in the Agents window. The form lets them edit the title and description, choose draft and merge options, and create the pull request.\n\nWhat is new: the changelog is a roundup, so some items arrived earlier in the month. Automations appeared in the 1.137 notes, about three weeks before the roundup. GitHub bundles them with other changes, including Mark as Done suggestions after a session's pull requests merge and agent sessions in Dev Containers.\n\nWhat is confirmed and what is not: both sources come from the Microsoft family, GitHub and the VS Code project, so they are not independent. We found no outside coverage that verified the agent merge or pull request form descriptions. Treat them as the vendor's account of its own features, not as tested behavior.\n\nWhy it matters: the features move agents from writing code toward managing the routine work around a pull request.
