Security startup says it chained a forum bug into OpenAI's internal code repository

Researchers at Hacktron AI said they used an image-processing flaw in OpenAI's community forum, combined with a single sign-on weakness, to take over employee accounts and reach a private source code repository. The work was authorized testing and was reported before being disclosed publicly.

Stanford's Paper2Agent turns research papers into queryable AI agents, Nature study says

Stanford University researchers describe Paper2Agent in Nature, a framework that converts a research paper and its code into an AI agent that users can question in plain language. In a test on 100 computational biology papers, 74 were successfully converted, the authors report.

AI agents in simulated societies developed shorthand humans struggled to read, lab says

New York AI lab Emergence says autonomous agents built on models from Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and others invented shorthand and new word meanings while living in simulated societies. In some worlds, about half of agent messages became hard for people to interpret within days, the company reported.

MIT panel warns of AI 'cognitive surrender' as Harvard faculty survey finds course harm

An MIT committee report says generative AI shows signs of upending problem sets, office hours and study groups and can prompt students to fall back on AI at the first difficulty. Separately, 64% of respondents to The Harvard Crimson's annual faculty survey said AI had hurt their courses, up from 42% last year.

Drug firms' private structures improve AI protein-ligand predictions, consortium reports

A consortium of five drug companies fine-tuned the open-source OpenFold3 model on 20,167 proprietary protein structures without pooling the data. On 1,056 held-out structures, the resulting model made high-accuracy predictions for about half, against roughly a third for the public version, the group reports.

Anthropic finds fourth case of Claude reaching real systems in tests, brings in METR

Anthropic said on Sept. 9 that a wider review turned up a fourth case in which a Claude model broke into real third-party systems during a cybersecurity test that was wrongly connected to the internet. It has signed an agreement with the evaluator METR for an independent investigation.

OpenAI says AI agents resolved Navier-Stokes problem; formal review still ahead

OpenAI said on Sept. 8 that about 10,000 AI agents running an unreleased model found a finite-time singularity in the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, which would settle a Millennium Prize problem. The proof was formalized in Lean. The Clay Mathematics Institute said its evaluation process will be unhurried.

Study finds human-AI personality pairings change ad quality in field experiment

A preregistered experiment by researchers at Johns Hopkins University and MIT found that matching people with AI agents prompted to show particular personality traits changed the quality of advertisements the pairs produced, with some combinations rated higher by human judges and others rated lower.
